And just like that this year has come to an end! Just like the past months, December flew by! I spent this Christmas in Berlin and was able to get in some gaming sessions with friends throughout the month.
In total I had 22 plays and 4 games were new to me. Here is the breakdown of my stats:
The 4 games that were new to me:
Arctic: This is another game I picked up at Essen, and I absolutely adore the artwork. As I played, I couldn’t help but admire the charming animal illustrations on the cards. I was pleasantly surprised by how well I managed to collect cards and score high in the game. Halfway through, I kept finding myself saying, “I really like this game.” I’m looking forward to bringing it to the table again - It's great as a warm-up or filler game.
Typewriter: I picked up this game on a whim at Essen for my mom, thinking it would be perfect for her. She’s always loved her typewriter, and I have fond memories of playing with it as a kid. The acrylic double-sided keys are a delight to handle and add charm to the game. I found it both fun and challenging, especially as it pushes you to come up with harder and more obscure words to maximize your points.
Rolling Heights: This game had been on my wishlist for a while, so when I saw it discounted at Essen, it was an easy decision to grab it. The box corner is wrinkled and ripped, but the game was still in shrinkwrap and half the normal retail price. I initially thought the rules might be intimidating due to the different powers of the various colored meeples, but it turned out to be surprisingly easy to learn. About two turns in, I started drawing parallels to another AEG game, Cubitos. I had a great time playing this and can’t wait to get it back to the table and introduce it to friends.
boop the Halls!: This was one of my Christmas gifts, so, of course, it had to be played right away! I’m already a fan of boop and own the BOOoop version. I love thinky games that are easy to learn but challenging to master! This one adds a fun twist with its multilevel board. Now, all I need is that boop plushie, and I’ll be all set!
