January has flown by, and just like that, the first month of 2025 is already behind us! January always feels special—a time for fresh starts and New Year’s resolutions. If you caught my last post, you’ll know I set some ambitious gaming goals for myself this year. This month was also extra exciting as I got to celebrate my birthday! I logged a total of 26 plays in January, including 3 games that were completely new to me.
Here is the breakdown of my stats:
The 3 games that were new to me:
Life of the Amazonia: This was one of my Christmas gifts, and I’m not one to let games sit unplayed for too long. I made it a priority to learn the rules and get this game to the table early in the year. I absolutely loved the gameplay and can’t wait to play it again. With the variety of cards and the mini expansion I picked up, there’s so much replayability. Now, I just need to decide if I’ll splurge on upgrading to the deluxe tokens!
Disney Lorcana: That's right, I finally jumped on the hype train! The Disney Lorcana: Gateway set was kindly gifted to my by my coworkers and I was completely shocked. Apparently, it was my boss’s idea, and now I need to study up because they’ve already challenged me! I’m really impressed with how the Gateway is set up. You start by learning the game with just half of your deck. As you play and accomplish the goals laid out for you, you unlock new sets of cards to add to your deck, gradually learning about the different types of cards and mechanics. It’s such a brilliantly designed system, and as someone who’s never played a Trading Card Game (TCG) before, I really appreciate the slow, approachable learning curve.
7 Wonders: While this game isn’t entirely new to me—I already own 7 Wonders Duel and 7 Wonders Architects—believe it or not, I had never actually played the original 7 Wonders until now. A friend who recently got into the board game hobby picked it up, and we played a few rounds together. I found myself facing tough decisions about which cards to keep because they all seemed valuable. However, since I rarely play with 3+ players, the game didn’t quite appeal to me as much. Even after all these years, I’m still glad to have the duel version, which I find a bit more cutthroat and fitting for my play style.
