New Year, New Games: My Christmas and Birthday Board Games

The holidays and my birthday brought some amazing surprises this year in the form of new board games and LEGO! Each of these bring something unique to the table, and I’m thrilled to dive into them. Here’s a quick look at what I’ve added to my collection.

boop the Halls! I kept seeing this game all over my Instagram feed during GenCon last summer, and I couldn't resist how adorable this new verion is! I knew it would make a perfect holiday game to play in December. I absolutely love the Christmas season in Germany, so you can imagine my delight when I unwrapped it on Christmas morning. A dear friend found it at one of my favorite board games stores in Berlin - it's always great to be able to support your FLGS. Now, I just need to track down the Jaboc Meowly and Ghosts of Boopmas expansion to complete my set.

Life of the Amazonia was another Christmas gift—one I specifically asked for. I only heard about this game a few months ago but quickly dove into reviews and playthrough videos to see if it was my kind of game. I love a good bag-builder, and engine-building games, so I knew this would be something that I could enjoy for a long time. Later, I splurged on the expansion and upgraded components. It’s hard to resist deluxifying my games these days!

HiFi was an unexpected birthday gift! I tried to buy this game for myself in December as a treat for finishing a huge project at work. Unfortunately it was sold out in Berlin. A friend managed to track it down and was able to snag a copy and surprise me for my birthday! I first saw this game debuted last year at GenCon and since, I've been waiting to get my hands on it. Just look at the cover! I think this game is so clever and incorporates the theme so well. I can't wait to explore it more.

Disney Lorcana: My colleagues had a wonderful surprise waiting for me at work - they had pooled together to gift me the Disney Lorcana: Gateway! This box is perfect for newcomers like me, as it includes two fixed card decks designed specifically for beginners. It also comes with a well-designed game board to help organize your cards during play and provides a handy reminder of steps for each turn. As a millennial who adores Disney, this gift hits the sweet spot (big surprise, I know!). I hadn't yet ventured into the game, mainly because I was worried about getting hooked and spending too much on booster packs. But now, I'm excited to ease into this enchanting world and see what all the hype is about!

Lucky Bamboo Lego: My brother is the true LEGO collector, but when the Botanical sets were introduced, I knew I had to get some for myself. I don’t have much of a green thumb, so these are perfect for me. The Lucky Bamboo set, released earlier this year, was an ideal birthday gift. Now, I just need to decide whether it will decorate my desk at home or in the office.

I want to take a moment to thank everyone who made this holiday season and my birthday so special—I’m truly grateful to have such amazing people in my life. As we step into the new year, I’m filled with excitement for all the adventures ahead. Let’s make it a year to remember—filled with laughter, meaningful connections, and, of course, plenty of board games!
