Keeping a Board Game Budget

Managing Your Board Game Budget: How to Enjoy the Hobby Without Breaking the Bank

As board game enthusiasts, the allure of shiny new releases, Kickstarter campaigns, and expansion packs can be really hard to resist sometimes. However, constantly adding to your collection can quickly become an expensive habit...
To keep your passion for board games enjoyable and financially sustainable, it’s essential to set a monthly budget and stick to it. I started doing this in 2024 and I'm happy to share some tips and strategies to help you manage your board game spending without feeling deprived.

The Temptation of New Releases

🎲Board gaming is an ever-evolving hobby, with exciting new titles and expansions being announced almost every month. It's easy to get caught up in the hype, especially when you see your favorite reviewers online or friends raving about the latest must-have game. However, it's important to remember that you don’t need to own every new game (even if you really want to) to enjoy the hobby fully.

Setting a Monthly Budget

💰The first step in managing your board game expenses is to establish a clear budget. Determine an amount that you can comfortably spend on games each month without impacting your other financial responsibilities. This amount will vary for everyone, so consider your overall financial situation and priorities.

Strategies for Sticking to Your Budget

1. Create a Wishlist: Maintain a wishlist of games (I use BGG) you’re interested in. Prioritize the games you want the most and focus on acquiring them first. This helps you avoid impulse buys and ensures you spend your budget on the games you truly desire.

2. Wait for Sales and Discounts: Patience can save you a lot of money. Many online and local game stores offer sales, especially during holiday seasons. By waiting for these discounts, you can often get the games you want at a fraction of the original price.

3. Trade or Sell Old Games: If your shelves are already full, consider trading or selling games you no longer play. This not only frees up space but also provides additio
nal funds to put towards new purchases. Platforms like BoardGameGeek’s marketplace or Ebay can be great for this.

4. Join a Game Group: Being part of a board game group allows you to try out new games without buying them. You can pool resources with friends or simply benefit from the diverse collections of your friends. This is a great way to experience a wide range of games while keeping your personal collection manageable.

5. Focus on Quality Over Quantity:
Instead of buying many games, focus on acquiring high-quality games that you’ll play repeatedly. A smaller collection of well-loved games can be more satisfying than a large collection of rarely played ones.

6. Set a “Cooling-Off” Period: When you find yourself wanting a new game, implement a cooling-off period of a few days or weeks before making the purchase. This helps curb impulsive buying and gives you time to consider if you really want the game.

Avoiding the Addiction

Board games are a fantastic hobby, but like any hobby, they can become an addiction. It’s important to remember why you love board games in the first place – for the enjoyment, the social interaction, and the challenge they provide.

By setting and sticking to a budget, you can continue to enjoy this wonderful hobby without the stress of overspending and avoiding overconsumption. Remember, the value of a game is not in its cost, but in the enjoyment and memories it brings. 😍

Final Thoughts

Managing a board game budget doesn't mean you have to miss out on all the fun. With a little planning and discipline, you can keep your spending in check and still build a collection that brings you joy. Happy gaming!
